Minor flooding closed schools in northern Dare and Currituck counties as water levels continued to rise on the Albemarle and Currituck sounds.
In Currituck, Walnut Island, Tulls Creek, Knotts Island, Bells Island, Beechwood Shores and East Ridge experience flooding early Tuesday, said county spokesman Randall Edwards.
“Some roads in these areas have water covering them and we are advising residents to avoid driving through floodwaters,” he said.
In Dare County and Manteo, some low-lying areas were seeing flooding Tuesday, as well, including downtown Manteo, Colington Road and Kitty Hawk Road.
Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said there was little concern that the flooding would get worse.
“The National Weather Service is not anticipating any greater water than we’re seeing now,” he said.
Edwards said officials hope the water will recede when winds start blowing more to the north.
“The current southerly winds are helping to push the water up from the sound onto land,” he said.
