Ililda Madeline Brickhouse Roughton, 81, of 94 Cooper Road, Columbia, died late Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018 at her home after a long illness.
Born in Tyrrell County, Sept. 30, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Winford Lawrence and Madeline Chaplin Brickhouse. She was married to Travis William Roughton who preceded her in death. She was a member of Soundside Original Free Will Baptist Church and spent her time caring for her family with cooking and love. She loved lighthouses and found joy in seeing them. In addition to her duties as “mother,” she worked in housekeeping for 15 years and also made fish nets.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Soundside Original Free Will Baptist Church. Pastor Royce Reynolds and Rev. Joe Wynns will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sons, James Roughton and wife, Christy, Tony Roughton and wife, Nancy, and Heath Roughton all of Columbia; a daughter, Laverne R. Jeske and husband, Ken of Columbia; a brother, Wayne Brickhouse of Columbia; two step-sisters, Polly Dillard of Trinity and Rachel Lilley of Washington; a step-brother, Aubrey Ludford of Columbia; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Rodgers Brickhouse, a step-mother, Mildred Dodge Brickhouse and a step-sister, Ann Ludford Shute.
