The new Herbert C, Bonner Bridge towers over the old span at Oregon Inlet. The bridge is the only highway connection between Hatteras Island and the mainland via the northern Dare County beaches.

When the high-rise portion of the bridge is finished, it will be 3,500 feet long with seven navigational spans. The new bridge will have 12-foot-wide travel lanes and eight-foot-wide shoulders. Construction on the new span began in March of 2016 and is scheduled to open in November of this year.
