The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division is investigating after a flag reading “Trump 2020” was briefly flown atop a state-run ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke on Thursday evening.
Ferry rider Randal Mathews posted a photo of the flag on Twitter, tagging NCDOT in the post, and received an immediate response from state officials saying the display was not appropriate.
NCDOT Ferry Division spokesman Tim Hass said the flag was flown on the M/V Frisco, which was running on the Hatteras-Ocracoke route, on Thursday evening.
“Regardless of political affiliation, putting any sort of campaign material on a state-owned vessel is not appropriate, and a violation of our policies,” he said.
Ferry division management is working with NCDOT’s Office of Employee Relations to investigate the matter.
“We will then take the appropriate disciplinary actions,” Hass said.
